The premier event took place during May, with all halls, colleges and lodges competing to save the highest percentage of water and electricity compared to May 2008. After a one year hiatus due to increased risk assessment procedures, IB was back with a devilishly tough run finishing at the ruins of the old Honeysuckle Creek Tracking Station. Bruce teams put in a strong performance and finished fourth in a field of eight, the first division team finishing a very close second behind Burgmann's experienced first division.

This month Bruce Hall mourned the loss of our first and much loved Warden, Mr Bill Packard OAM just a few days short of his 84th birthday. Bruce Hall residents and alumni were well represented at his memorial service at University House. Warden of Bruce Hall from 1961 to 1987, Bill maintained contact with our college following his retirement and we benefited from almost fifty years of his warm and generous presence in our community.

The new Head of Bruce Hall, Ms Marion Stanton, welcomed a new generation of residents to Bruce Hall this month. A former resident, Resident Fellow and Deputy Warden of Bruce Hall, Marion has a wealth of university experience as well as a deep commitment to residential life.

Those of us who remember Caroline Howe will be interested to read of her travels round India in an electric powered car with the Solar Punch Band: http://indiaclimatesolutions.com/road-tour. An amazing, life-changing, world-changing experience!

As the last residents departed the catered wings, North wing closes for a complete refurbishment, including new beds and carpet and a fresh coat of paint. North has always been one of our most popular wing in recent years, (it has the highest incidence of wireless access, but it's sure to be the most desirable address at Bruce next year!

As the month drew to a close we farewelled the ever increasing number of Bruce students leaving for a variety of international education opportunities, including summer school programmes at Yale and Oxford and exchange programmes in the US, Netherlands, China and Denmark. We also recieved our first international interns for the year, including two from Yale and two from Oxford. It is wonderful how many of our students have benefitted from the close ties the ANU has with so many other universities.

This year's Diversity symposium focused on sexuality. Speakers from a range of agencies spoke about different facets of sexuality and culture, sparking an evening of thoughtful and wide-ranging discussion that was a real highlight of the semester's programme. The following week, residents attended the Ally information evening - Ally is a network of staff and students which promotes a safe and inclusive environment for GLBTI students and staff at the ANU.

Place seven bands, several tonnes of food, drink and equipment and over 700 people in South Quad for over 5 hours and what do you have? The second Inter-Hall Band in the Quad Night (or the Big Night Out). The evening wouldn't have been so successful without the efforts of almost 50 volunteers from Bruce Hall, who helped set up, sold tickets, poured drinks, cooked bbq, painted faces and helped clean up. Our own Bruce Brothers band came a close second to John XXIII College and ended an excellent night with a selection that had the crowd on their feet.

We reached out to our Alumni this month, sending a newsletter to all our alumni registered with the ANU Alumni Office. The newsletter will include information about alumni events, college events to which alumni are invited and profiles. Past Bruce Hall alumni include Professor Ross Garnaut (1964), now Distinguished Professor of Economics, Australian National University and Vice Chancellorial Fellow and Proessorial Fellow at the University of Melbourne. Most recently, Professor Garnaut was commissioned by the Commonwealth Government to undertake a review examining the impact of climate change on the Australian economy and potential policies to counteract those effects.

Earth Hour was celebrated across campus on Satruday the 29th of March. Bruce Hall and the Sustainability Learning Community took part in many ways, including playing a leading role in preparations for the day, providing a task force of volunteers on the day and into the night (including our choir, which performed outside the Hall for the first time) and switching off as many lights and electrical appliances around the Hall as possible during the evening. Even the Buttery was in darkness!

This year Bruce Hall had the privillage of hosting the Hon. Gough Whitlam as our invited speaker at our Commencement Dinner. Mr Whitlam spoke of the responsibilities of universities such as the ANU to governments and the people of the nation, as well as his long-standing ties to the ANU.  He and his wife, Mrs Margaret Whitlam, were very generous guests and devoted much of their time at Bruce Hall to coversation with students who were very grateful for their kindness and consideration.

The year began on a very busy note as strong growth in applications for places at Bruce Hall meant a steady stream of visits by prospective students and their families.

After hosting two Yale students mid-year, Bruce resident Ed Boydell spent the summer on a green internship at Yale. Besides having a wonderful time, he hopes to bring back some new ideas and strategies for Bruce as well as the ANU campus. Other Bruce Hall residents are studying over summer in Amman, Copenhagen and Hong Kong, or travelling and visiting friends from Bruce in Japan, China, the US, Europe and all places in between.

Bruce Hall's Play for 2007, League: the Musical, proved an amazing success! Like all our recent Plays, this was written by a current resident and performed with great brio by the Bruce Hall Players at the Street Theatre at the end of September. A story of girls fighting for a place on the team and a chance to return Bruce to its former footballing glory, the play included the football team as corps de ballet, wicked commentary on inter-Hall sports politics and clever (and tuneful!) songs. No wonder each performance was recieved with rapturous applause!

08/07

On Wednesday, 8th of August, Bruce Hall ran an Alumni Hunt to begin re-establishing contact with our alumni. Bill Packard came to dinner and entertained the audience with tales of the early days of the Hall. Are you a Bruce Alumni? We'd love to hear from you. Update your details here: http://info.anu.edu.au/mac/alumni/. If you are an Alumni of Bruce Hall, but not an Alumni of the Australian National University, please email our front office enquiries.bruce@anu.edu.au.

Bruce Hall hosts two green interns from Yale this semester as part of our work in the Sustainability Learning Community. The students will be working on projects in the ANU Green office as well as being full members of the Bruce community. Other SLC activities this semester include the Hall acting as a research site for a grey water treatment plant. Water from the showers in North wing is being treated and recycled to flush toilets in North. We're also taking part in a pilot project which eventually aims to convert all organic waste on campus to compost. All of the food waste from the Bruce Hall kitchens is now delivered to the 'HotRot' composter instead of landfill.

Bruce Hall escaped with minor damage after a massive hail storm struck Canberra, and especially the ANU, on Tuesday night (27th February). Residents manned mops, buckets and towels to prevent flooding in the Foyer, Library and Senior Common Room and catch leaks in the recently refurbished Bernhard Neumann room.

Justice Michael Kirby was our guest speaker at this year's Commencement Dinner. His speech was widely anticipated and the Dining Hall was filled with over 300 attending dinner on the 21st of February.

Gong Xi Fa Cai!
Bruce Hall celebrated Chinese New Year in fine style this year! A lion dance was performed to summon luck and good fortune during a banquet in the decorated Dining Hall. Ms Rebekah (Beck) White was awarded the Tillyard Prize at graduation in December 2006. The Tillyard Prize is awarded for contributions to the campus and Canberra communities. Graduating with a First Class Honours Degree in Psychology, she also was awarded the University Medal in the same ceremony. Beck made huge contributions to the Bruce community in her time in the Hall, including serving as Resident Tutor in 2005, contributor to Cross-sections, Academic mentor and InwardBound team member. We wish her every success in her postgraduate studies.

The final Packard Society Dinner for the year was held on the 10th October. The new Head of Hall, Dr Neil Rodgers, has taken up his appointment at Bruce Hall this month. This is not Neil's first experience of Bruce Hall and the ANU: he has previously been Head of Burton and Garren Hall and also served as acting Head of Bruce Hall for a brief period in the late 90s. Neil brings a wealth of experience to the role of Head of Bruce Hall and we look forward to a great year in 2007.
