Commencement Dinner 2012

Bruce Hall was delighted to have Australia's latest Nobel Laureate, Professor Brian Schmidt, speak at our 2012 Commencement Dinner. Students had a wonderful opportunity to listen to a great speech, as well as to talk directly with Professor Schmidt after formalities concluded.

Bruce Hall is the Oldest undergraduate residence within the Australian National University, situated on the beautiful Acton campus in Canberra.

Bruce Hall celebrated its 50th Anniversary in 2011 and, since opening its doors in 1961, has established itself as a true community of scholars, where individualism is respected and excellence in all things is encouraged. The Hall fosters a self-regulating community where diversity is celebrated and inclusivity nurtured. A Bruce Hall experience lays strong leadership foundations, with many of our Alumni now enjoying successful careers in the judiciary, Parliament, leading universities and the corporate world. Being an integral part of one of Australia’s premier research and teaching universities enhances the opportunities available.

The Hall provides an academic, cultural and social environment – and, of course, accommodation – for 330 students (240 fully catered and 90 self catered) studying at the Australian National University.  Residents come to the Hall from all over Australia and from over 30 countries around the globe. There is a healthy mix of undergraduate and postgraduate students, all of which adds to the dynamic community environment that exists at the Hall. All residents are strongly encouraged to become involved in the life of the Hall to take advantage of the many and varied opportunities to further both their own education and the education of others. This website gives but a snapshot of the endless opportunities available here at Bruce. Come to Canberra and experience it for yourself.

Bruce Hall 50th Anniversary Commencement address

As the Hall was named after the University’s first Chancellor, Lord Stanley Melbourne Bruce, we were most honoured that the 50th Anniversary Commencement address was delivered by the ANU’s current Chancellor, Professor the Hon Gareth Evans AO QC.
